Mental Health and Wellbeing
At Denver Primary School, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of staff and pupils.
We believe that a strong emphasis on pastoral care is key to supporting the mental health needs of pupils and have sought to develop a caring ethos based on the values of kindness and respect. We value the contribution to school life of each pupil and staff member. We understand that creating an environment in which pupils and staff feel safe is central to the mental health and wellbeing of pupils and staff.
We understand that at times, the challenges of everyday life can mean anyone can experience feelings of anxiety, stress and vulnerability and that they may need help and support to overcome such feelings. We take the view that mental health and wellbeing is everyone’s responsibility and we all have a role to play in ensuring pupils and staff are able to meet the emotional and mental health needs of pupils and staff.
Mrs L Jones is our Senior Mental Health Lead and Mental Health Champion.
Mr A Cawley is also our Mental Health Champion.
Our Wellbeing Ambassadors on our School Council are Oliver and Ella-Rose.

With the Covid-19 pandemic still ongoing and uncertain, Barnardo's have created a support hub which is updated regularly. The hub includes information for both professionals and families. It includes topics such as how to talk to your children, tips on returning to school and tools for anxiety. This May Help is a new national initiative providing mental health advice to parents and carers. This May Help is aimed at parents and carers who may have concerns about their child's mental health and is part funded by the Quality Improvement Taskforce for Children and Young People's Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Inpatient Services.
The website gives easy-to-follow advice to help families manage their child's mental health. This advice was developed by NHS professionals and parents who've been through their own child's mental health journey. Parents and carers have shared advice that helped them and that may also help other families.
The advice covered on This May Help includes: self-harm, gaming and online activity, teenagers safety, eating disorders, school avoidance, understanding mental health, understanding teenagers, online threats, building rapport, building resilience, building a support network, self-care tips, managing an emergency, managing in a crisis, and preparing for a children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) appointment. These subjects were chosen by families and young people who have gone through their own mental health challenges. Gary Lineker, Myleene Klass, and Tanni Grey-Thompson are amongst 16 presenters featured in the films.
